Dentist Spotlight: Dr. Jose Gonzales

Dr. Jose Gonzales of G Dental Studio in Goodyear

For Dr. Jose Gonzales, dentistry wasn’t always the plan. While studying at the University of Texas in San Antonio, he explored different medical careers but was drawn to dentistry’s hands-on work, flexibility and strong sense of community. After acing his dental entrance exam, he never looked back. Now, nearly 30 years later, he runs G Dental Studio in Goodyear, where he prioritizes patient-focused care and the latest dental technology.

Do you brush and floss as much as you recommend?
Yes, I do! Even though I’m not a fan of flossing, I still encourage my patients to do it because it’s one of the most effective ways to clean between your teeth. In a perfect world, you should brush and floss after every meal, but no one is perfect, so try to brush after meals and floss at least twice a week!

What is your favorite flavor of floss?
I don’t have a favorite flavor—I’m just more focused on getting the job done, whether it’s regular floss, a floss pick or water flossing.

Electric or manual toothbrush?
I used to teach the ideal way to brush with a manual toothbrush, but now I prefer electric toothbrushes. They make brushing easier and more effective, especially for people with manual dexterity issues. Many electric toothbrushes now even help you track your brushing pressure and technique, which is incredibly useful.

Which celebrity has the best smile?
That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say Alexandra Daddario. She has a beautiful smile that’s both genuine and captivating, with her bright eyes and wide, natural smile.

If you could tell patients to stop doing one thing, what would it be?
Almonds! They’re healthy but can be tough on your teeth. Biting down on them can lead to broken teeth, crowns or fillings.

What is the best dental advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I ever received was from my own dentist growing up: “Go to the dentist regularly because it’s easier to fix problems when they’re small.” This is something I always tell my patients—early detection is key to a more comfortable and less expensive treatment.

What is the best thing about being a Delta Dental dentist?
Delta Dental advocates for their patients, allowing me to focus on what’s best for the patient rather than getting caught up in insurance restrictions. I really appreciate how they support me in providing the best care possible.

Any funny stories from the dental chair?
I have a funny story from when I worked as an associate dentist. We used nitrous oxide regularly, and one of our patients was very nervous. The other dentist I worked with administered her nitrous oxide and might have given her a little more than she needed. She began happily singing along to the music playing at the office, and before I knew it, she had grabbed the dentist and started to dance with him. It was hilarious!

How would you describe oral health’s impact on your patients’ overall health and well-being?
A healthy mouth isn’t just about teeth; it impacts your whole body, and maintaining good oral health is essential for living a long, healthy life. Poor hygiene can lead to gum disease, which is linked to heart disease and other serious issues. My mom always told me to chew my food 21 times before swallowing it, and I didn’t think much of it back then. But she was right—proper chewing helps break food down, making it easier for the body to metabolize.

What is your favorite dental joke?
When patients tell me about their dental issues, sometimes I jokingly say, “It’s all in your head,” because your mouth is in your head. They don’t always get it at first, but when they do, it gets a laugh out of them.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you bring?
Sunglasses, sunscreen and a knife for survival!
