Dentist Spotlight: Dr. Aristidis Pontikas

Dr. Pontikas at Pontikas Implants & Periodontics

We’d like to introduce you to Delta Dental Dentist Dr. Aristidis Pontikas of Pontikas Implants and Periodontics in Phoenix. Dr. Pontikas has been named a Phoenix Top Dentist and is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, Academy of Osseointegration and American Dental Association. He’s also the first person in his family to become a dentist and is fluent in Greek!

What made you decide to become a dentist?

I am from a first-generation Greek family. My parents were particular about education and I had a positive influence from our family dentist. I decided to specialize in periodontics while in dental school. When I watched my first periodontal surgery it was love at first sight—I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve been in periodontics and private practice for nearly 20 years now.

What is your specialty/area of interest?

I am a full-time, private practice periodontist. The practice is broad in nature and we see everything from periodontal disease and implants to surgery and oral medicine.

Do you brush and floss as much as you recommend?

Absolutely.

What is your favorite flavor of toothpaste?

Colgate Total. I have sensitive soft tissues and Colgate Total doesn’t irritate them.

Electric or manual toothbrush (for yourself and recommended for patients)?

I use a manual toothbrush for myself. I tell patients to use whatever works best in their own hands. I support my patient’s preference. It’s about them and what they will use regularly.

Which celebrity has the best smile?

Julia Roberts has a beautiful, broad smile.

If you could tell patients to stop doing one thing, what would it be?

In general, try to stop self-diagnosing. Use caution when doing your own research online. It’s important to have a qualified professional provide you with accurate information.

What is the best dental advice you’ve ever received?

Care for your patients the same way you would a family member by understanding and supporting their decisions.

What is the best thing about being a Delta Dental dentist?

Being able to work together to provide the best care for patients.

What is your favorite dentist joke?

Q: What’s a dentist’s favorite time?
A: Tooth-thirty

Do you have any funny stories from the dentist’s chair?

It’s funny how many patients want to take selfies so they can post on social media.

Can you tell me about the connection between oral health and diabetes?

Absolutely. There is a connection between uncontrolled diabetes and periodontal disease. Just as diabetics protect other systems in their bodies, it’s important to care for their oral health too.

What are three things that always make you smile?

  1. My wife and children
  2. The group of professionals I surround myself with in my practice
  3. As a child of immigrants, I’m grateful for the opportunity and freedom I have in this country

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you bring?

  1. Family for good company
  2. A Peloton
  3. Chef’s knives and cookware
