When we think of Hispanic Heritage Month, food and drink are at the center of the celebration. From savory dishes passed down through generations to refreshing beverages served at family gatherings, these flavors are part of what makes Latino culture so vibrant.
One drink that captures this spirit is agua fresca. These fruity beverages are light, hydrating and full of flavor. You’ll find them in markets, at taquerías and in kitchens where families continue traditions with every sip.
This month, we’re spotlighting a refreshing favorite: Agua de Limón y Pepino con Chia (Cucumber Lime Agua Fresca with Chia Seeds). Simple to make and full of nutrients, it’s the perfect way to toast to culture, community and health.
Ingredients
- 2 cucumbers (regular or English)
- 6 cups water, divided
- 1/2 cup lime juice (from about 6 limes)
- 1/3 to 1/2 cup sweetener (honey or agave, to taste)
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds (optional)
- Ice, for serving
- Garnish: cucumber ribbons, lime slices
Directions
- Blend the base: Cut the tips off the cucumbers, chop into pieces and blend with 3 cups of water until smooth.
- Juice the limes: Add fresh lime juice to the blender. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp.
- Sweeten: Stir in sweetener of your choice until dissolved.
- Add chia seeds: Mix in chia seeds and let sit for 30 minutes at room temperature, stirring occasionally.
- Serve: Pour over ice, garnish with cucumber ribbons or lime slices and enjoy.
