Rethink Your Refund: Invest in Your Oral Health

Use your refund to invest in your oral health!
Take a few dollars of your tax refund and put it toward your dental health.

April 15 is a dreaded day for some – and a delightful day for others. If you’re expecting to get a few bucks back from your tax return this year, why not invest in your oral health? No matter the size of your refund, there’s something you can nab to make your smile sparkle.

Tooth whitening
For a splurge, consider a professional whitening session with your dentist. Although it’s the most expensive whitening option, it’s also the fastest. In just one to three quick sessions with your dentist, you’ll have whiter teeth that will last up to five years. Your dentist can also make custom-fit trays for you to use for home bleaching.

For those with less of a refund to play around with, over-the-counter whitening kits are available at many retail stores. The at-home kits will take a little longer to work since the bleaching agent isn’t as strong as what your dentist can provide, but they are more wallet-friendly.Be sure to consult with your dentist before starting any whitening routines.

An electric toothbrush
Manual toothbrushes have proven to be just as effective as electric versions as long as users are brushing for the recommended two minutes using the proper techniques. Studies have shown, however, that electric models can be helpful for people who have tricky spots to reach or people with dexterity problems. Electric toothbrushes can be helpful for people with braces, parents brushing their young children’s teeth and anyone who suffers from arthritis in their hands or wrists.

A visit to the dentist
Because Delta Dental coverage pays for certain preventive measures, you can stop in for a checkup even if you owed Uncle Sam this year. If you’re due for your regular exam, call your dentist to get it on the books. He or she will be able to suggest other options to improve your oral health, regardless of the size of your budget.
