Every September, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to honor the traditions, flavors and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. And when it comes to food, few things are more iconic than the tortilla. From tacos and enchiladas to quesadillas and burritos, tortillas are the foundation of countless beloved dishes.
This year, we’re bringing you a healthier, mouth-friendly twist on a classic staple: homemade oat tortillas. Forget store-bought versions loaded with preservatives. These tortillas are fresh, wholesome and made with just two simple ingredients: oats and water.
Why Oat Tortillas are a Great Choice
Tortillas are a staple in Hispanic cuisine, but making them with oats offers some added benefits:
- Naturally gluten-free & vegan: Perfect for anyone with dietary restrictions.
- Nutrient-rich: Oats provide fiber, protein and essential vitamins to support overall health.
- Mouth-healthy: Fiber-rich foods help keep you fuller longer and reduce the need for cavity-causing snacks.
- Versatile: Enjoy them for tacos, wraps, breakfast burritos or even as a base for mini pizzas.
What You’ll Need
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of oats (or oat flour)
- ¾ cup of water
- (Optional) Herbs, spices, or seasonings for flavor
Equipment:
- Blender or food processor (if starting with whole oats)
- Non-stick frying pan
- Spatula
Directions:
- Blend: Combine oats and water in a blender until smooth. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes to thicken.
- Pour: Heat a non-stick pan on medium, lightly coat with oil or spray and pour in about ⅓ cup of batter. Spread evenly.
- Cook & Flip: Cook for 3–4 minutes until edges lift. Flip and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
- Repeat: Continue until all tortillas are cooked.
That’s it! You’ve got fresh, warm oat tortillas ready to enjoy!
