Do you brush and floss as much as you recommend?

Always. Yes. Oh yeah. I even recommend it to my kids as well.

What is your favorite flavor of floss?

I guess I’d say mint. That’s the standard one. I didn’t know there were other flavors!

Electric or manual toothbrush?

Electric. Yeah, hands down. It feels cleaner. I like the timer function, and then there are usually some different modes. It just feels cleaner.

Which celebrity has the best smile?

The classic one is Julie Roberts. She has this big, open smile. You can literally see molar to molar.

If you could tell patients to stop doing one thing, what would it be?

Be aware of your sugar intake, especially the sticky candies. They are a big component for the start of decay. If you can eliminate sugar and keep the sticky stuff from your teeth, you will be successful at preventing tooth decay for the most part. Leaving it overnight gives a chance for the process to start. The bacteria from the sugar will basically break down your tooth. If you do use sugary stuff, just rinse off with water and brush your teeth timely. Then you’ll be successful.

What is the best dental advice you’ve ever received?

Make yourself the patient and you’ll always have the right answer. That’s from my friend Tom who is a fellow dentist. And that advice has always stuck with me. I think it’s good.

What is the best thing about being a Delta Dental dentist?

I haven’t ever gotten involved with insurance, until the 2024 Delta Dental of Arizona annual meeting. This was my first time attending. I got something in the mail and thought I’d go to see what it was all about.

I was very surprised. They’re very transparent. I know Delta Dental is a big, national dental company and a lot of people stand behind them. I’ve had an easy time getting to know everyone which is very welcoming. The CEO and staff really made an effort to get to know me and that’s very important for me from a dentist standpoint. You normally don’t get these interactions, so I think it says a lot about the company. That means they care, they want to listen to what’s really going on out there, and they really want to make a difference. I like working with people who care because this is a professional about taking care of people. I think it’s very important to have good resources and be able to get in touch with people face-to-face instead of just email.

How would you describe oral health’s impact on their overall health and well-being?

Yeah, it’s a big one. It’s been shown that oral health is a gateway to your overall health. You can pick up a lot of things inside the mouth that would tell you that there’s something going on systemically. And there have been numerous studies to show the connections. For example, periodontal disease is linked with heart disease. It’s important to bear that in mind.

If you have any major surgery, you have to be cleared of any infections because they will affect the success of the procedure. A good medical professional will get clearance from the patient’s dentist and will know to overview the patient’s overall and dental health. It’s basically a team effort—a good team will work together to carry the football to the endzone.

What is your favorite dental joke?

Probably the tooth-hurty jokes!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you bring?

Probably something to make fire, water filtration, and floss!
