Healthy Halloween Treat: Wise Owl Snack

wise owl and apple spiders Halloween snacks

It’s almost Halloween!  Every store I go into has that aisle with every type of candy imaginable spilling off the shelves in preparation for the annual horde of trick-or-treaters. I do love all the little super heroes, princesses, dragons and butterflies coming to my door, but I truly feel for the parents who must negotiate with their children on how many pieces they can have tonight and the rest of the week.

One way I ward off too much negotiation with my little pumpkin is to fill her with something healthy and fun to make before she heads out for trick-or-treating. She loved the owls we made. Fun, healthy and took enough time to make to distract her from how healthy it really was!

Wise Owl Healthy Snacks

You’ll need the following ingredients to make these wise owl snacks:

  • Brown or regular rice cakes (we used brown rice cakes)
  • Peanut butter or your favorite nut-free butter
  • Apple slices
  • Cheerios or similar cereal
  • Banana slices
  • Blueberries
  • Carrot

Step 1: Peel the carrot and toss the skins. Then use the peeler to cut thick strips of carrot.

Step 2: Cut those thick carrot strips into triangles for the owl’s nose.

Step 3: Spread peanut butter all the way to the edges of the rice cake – as thick or thin as you like.

Step 4: Place apple slices on either side of the rice cakes and banana slices at the top.

Step 5: Add a tiny bit of peanut butter to the back of the blueberries and stick them to the bananas.  Place the carrot triangles below the bananas and arrange the cereal over the rest of the peanut butter.

Step 6: Enjoy!

We also made apple spiders, which is another fun and healthy treat that’s also good for your teeth. Love this activity and want to try another? We have more recipes and tips for a healthy Halloween.
