3 Tips for Establishing a Speedy Smile Routine the Whole Family Can Follow

Including oral health as part of your family's daily routine is sure to keep everyone smiling!

Including oral health as part of your family’s daily routine is sure to keep everyone smiling!

Chef. Chauffer. Teacher. Event coordinator. Financial planner. Personal shopper.

What if we told you approximately 66% of Americans juggle all six of these jobs? Would you believe these individuals make a $0 annual salary? It’s true, and you might even be one of them.

So, who are these remarkable, multi-tasking people?

Moms and dads will do just about anything to ensure healthy, happy children. But with the constant appointments, practices and crazy schedules, it’s hard to keep everything (and everyone) in line.

While it’s fine to occasionally rush out the door without your cell phone, you should never leave the house without brushing your teeth. Tooth decay is nearly 100% preventable, which means the (healthy smile) ball is in your court.

When we get busy, we tend to be less organized. Here are some tips to ensure a smoother routine and a smile-filled family:

  • Repetition makes routine. Make your brushing behaviors more second nature than they already are. Do everything in the same order. Wake-up, shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, BRUSH. Regardless of which order works for you, enjoy meals before you brush.
  • Do it together. Kill multiple birds with one stone – make brushing and flossing a family affair! If you can’t do it together everyday, keep kids accountable with a brushing and flossing chart.
  • Keep everything in the same place. Keep toiletries together in their respective bathroom. For example, don’t store a hairbrush in the kitchen junk drawer (gross!). Your hairbrush is happier in its home – the bathroom. And your toothbrush is too.

I brush my teeth each morning and night with my 7-year-old daughter and I was just thinking the other day how if my Mom had done that with my brothers and sisters and I that it would have been a lot easier to get us to brush. She just told us to “go brush”. Now, there were four of us kids, so it wasn’t as easy to get 5 people in the bathroom all brushing at the same time using the same sink (ewww, come to think of it). But I think my daughter will have a good example and good memories of our time together each day and a strong foundation for good oral health because we do brush together. Thanks for the tip!
