Watch Cavities Form Before Your Eyes: A DIY Craft for Kids

As another school year rolls around, it’s another chance to engage little minds and find creative ways to supplement learning with crafts and activities that let kids use their hands and their brains. Lessons that encourage children to learn through doing are important for developing motor skills, listening skills and critical thinking. Plus, they’re just more fun!

That’s why we’ve created another easy-to-follow lesson plan that teaches kids a little bit about their oral health and following directions. Tooth decay, which is nearly 100% preventable, is quite common among school-age children. In fact, it’s the number one chronic disease among children. So, teaching kids what cavities are, why they’re harmful and how to prevent them from forming is a great way to get kids thinking about their health.

This fun craft shows kids how and why these cavities begin to form on their chompers and why brushing and flossing every day is so important. And you won’t need to search high and low for ingredients—you probably already have everything on hand, making it the perfect activity for parents, teachers and caregivers.

Jessica Arnold is the social media and content specialist at Delta Dental of Arizona. She has a background in digital marketing and really appreciates how social media platforms can connect consumers and companies in a more meaningful way. She’s a true native Phoenician who loves spending time outside (when it’s not so hot!) with her daughter and husband. She's passionate about good overall health and is excited to have found her way into a company that enables wellness in Arizona. Her favorite social network is Reddit, where she can take a deep dive into very random topics (including oral health). With a toddler at home she’s slowly learning more about children’s oral health and how to get them to brush their little chompers—a daily battle, but well worth it!
