Dentist Spotlight: Dr. Alexandria Schwei

Dr. Schwei and staff of Premier Valley Dental

This month, we’d like to introduce you to Delta Dental dentist Dr. Alexandria Schwei of Premier Valley Dental in Phoenix. Dr. Schwei is a family dentist who works to deliver comprehensive dental care to patients of all ages.

What made you decide to become a dentist?
I originally wanted to become a teacher. When I was in my senior year of high school, I took an Anatomy class and discovered that I enjoyed it and was good at it! My mom then suggested I consider dentistry. Once I realized I could still teach my patients (just on oral health instead of school subjects) as a dentist, my mind was made up!

What is your specialty/area of interest?
I am a true family dentist. I love serving patients of all ages. I also especially enjoy the cosmetic side of dentistry. I’ve learned that a healthy smile can transform someone and boost their confidence.

Do you brush and floss as much as you recommend?
Absolutely! Probably more than I even recommend.

What is your favorite flavor floss?
Mint. I am not a fan of the taste of bubble gum-flavored dental products!

Electric or manual toothbrush?
Electric. I use a manual when I travel and I’m always so excited to get home and switch back to my electric toothbrush.

Which celebrity has the best smile?
Julia Roberts has the prettiest smile. I also think Ryan Gosling has a great smile.

If you could tell patients to stop doing one thing, what would it be?
Stop using your teeth to open bags, bobby pins or as a tool in general.

What is the best dental advice you’ve ever received?
“Treat every patient as if it’s your family member in that chair.”
Also, my grandma always told me, “Be true to your teeth or they’ll be false to you.”

What is the best thing about being a Delta Dental dentist?
Our patients always talk about how amazing Delta Dental’s customer service is. Many companies and individuals have Delta Dental, so it allows me to see a wide variety of patients.

Any funny stories from the dental chair?
I was working on a child one day and his mom left the exam room for a minute. He confessed to me that he steals cookies during the day when his mom isn’t around and hides them under his covers so that he can eat them at night.

What is your favorite dental joke?
What do you call a bear without teeth?
A gummy bear!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you bring?
1. Sunscreen
2. My iPad
3. A lighter
