We’d like to introduce you to Delta Dental dentist, Dr. Jeanette MacLean of Affiliated Children’s Dental Specialists in Glendale. Dr. MacLean is a pediatric dentist who is known for her advocacy of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and minimally invasive dentistry.
Do you brush and floss as much as you recommend?
Absolutely!
Why did you become a denitst?
My mom suggested a medical field profession. I really wanted to do something with a perfect balance between art and science. I love interacting with people.
If you could tell patients to stop doing one thing, what would it be?
The trend of sour candy is destroying teeth. It’s a double-whammy of sugars and acids. Put down the sour candies and have a little chocolate.
What is the best dental advice you’ve ever received?
I had a couple incipient lesions as a child and I am grateful that my dentist took a conservative approach. Instead of intervening restoratively, my dentist recommended flossing and fluoride use.
What is the best thing about being a Delta Dental dentist?
Delta Dental of Arizona is the easiest carrier to deal with. You make my office manager’s job easier. You value your providers as well as make a difference in the community.
Any funny stories from the dental chair?
Most of the time, children have no filter. Sometimes they say things that should be left unsaid. They say a lot of funny things!
If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you bring?
My husband and my two children.
What is something interesting about you that not many people know?
I travel the country lecturing about the benefits of silver diamine fluoride (minimally invasive dentistry). People assume that parents reject it because of poor aesthetics. If it means preventing a child from having to be sedated or having their tooth drilled and filled, there are many parents who choose SDF.
Anything else you’d like to add?
The silver diamine fluoride program is unique. It helps spread awareness and increase access to care and safety.
