5 Ways Living In Arizona Impacts Your Dental And Vision Health

Living in Arizona offers a unique blend of climate, geography, culture and lifestyle. It’s an exciting place to call home! However, the things that make living in Arizona special may also have an impact on your dental health and vision health. Here are five issues to look out for:

  1. Dry Mouth: The dry weather in Arizona can also make your mouth dry. A dry mouth can make it easier for bacteria to build up. This increases your chances of bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay.
  2. Dry Eyes: Because it’s so dry, your eyes might feel dry too. You can also get dry eyes from swimming in salt water or chlorine. Dry eyes are uncomfortable and may increase the chances of infections or blurred vision.
  3. Cavities: The heat makes it so tempting to have more sugary drinks. Too much sugar can increase the risk of getting cavities.
  4. Allergies: Phoenix and Tucson are among the worst cities in the U.S. for allergies. Allergies can cause itchy eyes and even toothaches!
  5. Sun Damage: Too much sunlight can create a glare and increase your risk of getting a sunburn on your cornea. This is known as pterygium.

Protect Your Health

It’s important for you to take preventive measures to protect your dental health and vision when you live in Arizona. This includes:

  • Drinking water to stay hydrated… making sure to wash your water bottle every day!
  • Wearing sunglasses and hats to shield your eyes from the sun
  • Staying inside when the sun is at its strongest (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
  • Wearing goggles while swimming

Also, make sure to visit your in-network dentist and eye doctor regularly to stay on top of any issues that may come up.
